Julian Chapman

Yacht Designer

Julian Chapman is a Maine native having grown up in Brooksville on the Blue Hill Peninsula. He attended Brooksville Elementary and George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. Julian is a self-prescribed “theatre kid” who went to Bennington College in Vermont, where he graduated with a BA in Political Science.

Following college, Julian spent time traveling to places like Peru, then he landed on Cape Cod where he scored a job working for Arey’s Pond. At Arey’s Pond, Julian fell in love with sailing and being on the ocean where for four seasons he was “the waterman,” spending nearly every day on the ocean from April to November delivering boats, moorings, and occasionally rescuing capsized or stranded customers.

Julian clearly caught the “wooden boat bug” at Arey’s Pond because he decided to enroll at The Landing School in their Yacht Design program, a rigorous and fast-paced track to pursue.

After he completed the Yacht Design program, Julian moved to Florida where he took a job working for the production boatbuilding company, Catalina. At Catalina, he was able to practice a lot of the skills he had recently learned in school: renderings, structural, and more. After Catalina, Julian worked for two more well-known producers of boats: Intrepid and Nautique. Each brought different areas of experience from fiberglass toolings to structural design.

Julian lived in Florida for seven years practicing marine design and establishing different areas of expertise, but most of all, this time created a capacity for adaptation and an unquenchable desire to learn and do more.

Ultimately, it was this desire that brought Julian back home to Maine, to work as a Yacht Designer for the BBY Design Team, where some of the most incredible custom boats in the USA are designed and built. Today, Julian lives in Orrington with his wife and two sons.
